Diaspora – A step forward in social networking!

Diaspora: The privacy aware, personally controlled, do-it-all, open source social network.

A while ago, I was talking about noserub, a step forward towards decentralised social networks. Now while this was far from perfect it was a good step forward, I’ve been keeping my ear to the ground and one of the projects I’m really looking forward to is Diaspora while it’s still under wraps, it should be launching in around 9 days (15th Setember!)

Diaspora is a truly decentralised social network, you control who holds your data, you can even have it stored on your own node, on your own web server! It will still fully interact with encrypted streams with your friends Profiles and servers!

I can’t wait to get my hands on this software and get a chance to try it out. The only problem as I see it is getting less tech savvy friends to move to the new network. Even if companies like Yahoo, MSN  & Google offer their own nodes on the Diaspora network, I still see a tough challenge ahead for Diaspora. I’ll personally be offering (if supported) access to accounts for my friends.

Some of the Key features Facebook & Others miss out on which have been included in Diaspora are:
You control you data, and access to it!
Share some stuff with your drinking buddys and not your Boss!
Taking the best from Twitter, Facebook, Flickr  & other interfaces into one packages

I just hope they can pull it off, I’m not sure it will replace Flickr for photos, or Twitter for micro blogging, only time will tell!

I hope Diaspora lives up to the hype! I will be posting a review after I’ve had the chance to set it up and hopefully convinced some of my friends to join in.

p.s. Take a look at their website

How about a Guernsey Node running on scalable servers?!

Sounds like a good idea! Were you thinking of doing it?
