Continuing My Path to an MCTS (70-562 or 70-528)

Before I start I’ve had this post sitting in draft since early September, and have been trying to make up my mind.

I think I have decided on going down the ASP route for my next exam, even though its the route that most people seem to take. I was also thinking about taking the WCF exam next, however I would need to take another exam after that before I got my MCTS. I also thought about taking an exam for Workflows, which could be useful in my current job, however I decided not to in the end. So now I continue my path not down the 70-528 path but the newer 70-562 path.

The reason I have selected the newer 70-562 exam over the 70-528 is due to a couple of factors:

  1. My Experience so far in ASP.NET has only been in VS 2008
  2. It’s the latest version of the exam, and most likely to be in demand
  3. It covers aspects of the previous exam, as well as newer .NET 3/3.5 content
  4. It’s less likely to be over saturated (i.e. less people should have the cert.)

I also considered taking the WCF exam (as noted above), however this technology works well in conjunction with ASP.NET and it’s not like I can’t take this exam later. (So more reason to take an asp exam first.)

I now have a copy of the Microsoft Training Kit (On Order). I am slowly (at present) working my way through the book.  I hope it wont be too long before I’m ready to take my exam (I hope), I’m aiming for 2-3 months depending on how much time I get to study.

Once I’ve completed my studies & exam I will do another write up like I did for the 70-536 exam, providing links, information and general guidance on taking this exam. I will also try to keep you updated along the way.
